‘I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubblegum.’ – They Live (1988)

The late Roderick George Toombs aka ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper was best known as the hotheaded Canadian-Scots nemesis to the likes of Hulk Hogan and anyone who took his fancy in the gloriously preposterous sporting arena that is
American pro wrestling, helping to establishing the WWF/WWE brand at home and abroad.

Yes, even in little old pre-digital, pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland circa 1987-1989, corrupted by SKY Bsb’s coverage of Wrestlemania and the weekly WWF spats that arose between overgrown muscled man-children in spandex pants. Not quite on the cusp of adolescence, myself and childhood ‘pals’ would rough each other up in local gardens and fields simulating various wrestling moves and adopting the persona’s of our favourite characters we copped from the telly.
