The Human League – Seconds (1981)

I fell in love with a Greek girl once and whenever I heard a song play I felt as though the spark of a thousand flames and the light of a thousand distant suns flowed inside of me. What does any of that have to do with a track from Human League’s seminal synth pop classic ‘Dare‘. Well, the answer may be in that long players title and it may not. But, there are answers contained within  these rhythms perhaps, that perfect electronic drum machine beat that lulls you and moves you, the delicious keyboard riff that surges and promises optimism, bright shining futures whilst the words clumsily recount a sad history. Oakey‘s forthright, strident vocals push the sadness aside and for a few minutes,we bask in a glistening near future utopia where man and machine entwine for ever more.
