I happened upon this when searching for still images from Terence Malick’s 1978 film Days of Heaven.
The similarities between this image and the style of Malick’s film are startling. From a certain distance, this could be an actual scene from the movie as shot by Nestor Alemandros.
The extraordinarily visual beauty of Days was no doubt inspired quite heavily by Wyeth’s paintings. The lushness of detail, a sense of depth and perpsective are quite dramatic here. There is both an incredible stillness and energy emanating from the canvas.
She seems both part of and seperate in her world. Is she anticipating, waiting or waking from some deep dream? Mysteries of motion, shade and a feeling that she at the midst of some personal drama which we have intruded upon.
