This never fails. Turn it on, smile, laugh at life, at yourself, celebrate fucking up, getting fucked up, taking risks, looking stupid, stumbling through life…though from a personal perspective, when Replacements front man Paul Westerberg rasps, ‘How young are you, how old am I..just count the rings around my eyes..’ at the songs intro, it always speaks to me of a very particular kind of male-female relationship and to a very specific form of male insecurity; that of the older man- younger woman variety, the teacher-pupil dynamic. Without getting too psychoanalytical, the song is also a raucous call to forget all of your hang ups, be reckless and age, social status be damned. A joyous rock anthem for those living on the edges.
